Should a custom drawstring bag be sublimated or screen printed?
Choose sublimation when the artwork is full color, a photo, a gradient or a pattern that runs over the whole bag: the dye goes into polyester fabric, every color costs the same, and the print runs edge to edge. Choose screen printing when the design is a one- or two-color logo on one side, when the bag body is cotton or canvas, or when you want a light logo on a dark bag. Sublimation cannot print white and cannot lighten a dark fabric.
When does sublimation make sense for a drawstring bag?
- The design covers both sides. Fabric is printed flat first, then cut and sewn, so the print can reach the side seams and the bottom corners.
- Team and event kits. Names or numbers can change from bag to bag within one run; supply a data sheet with your artwork and we confirm handling at quotation.
- Many colors. A photographic design and a two-color design cost the same per color, because sublimation has no per-color screens.
The trade-off is fabric: sublimation bonds only to polyester and high-polyester blends. For a drawstring bag, 300D polyester is the usual base: light, smooth and economical, and it prints bright and sharp.
When is screen printing the better choice?
- A simple logo in one or two solid colors on one side
- A cotton or canvas drawstring bag: sublimation does not work on these fabrics, and screen printing does
- A dark bag body with a light logo, which sublimation cannot print
Screen printing pushes ink through a screen onto the surface of the bag panel, so the logo sits in one area rather than running over seams.
How do cords and seams change the artwork on a drawstring bag?
A drawstring bag is a small format, and its weak points are also its artwork boundaries.
- The cord channel at the top is folded and stitched, so keep text and logos below it.
- Cord exits at the bottom corners carry the load when the bag is worn on the back, so leave those corners free of fine detail.
- Side seams cut through a sublimated pattern. Build the file with 15 mm bleed past every panel edge and keep critical content 20 mm inside the trim line.
- A front zip pocket, if the bag has one, splits the front panel into two print areas.
Can we see the print before bulk production?
Yes. Approve colors on a physical sample, never on screen: send Pantone coated codes as the target and check the result in your hands. Sample 7-15 days, subject to style complexity and confirmed per project. Bulk production usually takes 15-30 days after approval. MOQ from 50 pcs*; when each bag carries a different name or number, the quantity is counted per design.
